Summertime Safety Tips

Summer is a time for being outdoors.  So to help you have the most fun, here's some basic tips.

  1. Prepare for the sun!   If you can, avoid being in the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.  Clothes are the best defense for keeping out harmful rays.  Considering a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses as basic outdoor wear.  In addition, use sunscreen especially a product that offers both UVA and UVB protection.  Reapply about every two yours and make sure to reapply after swimming.
  2. Respect the water.   Heading to the beach or pool – then take the necessary safety precautions.  Summer is a great time to learn how to swim as many municipalities offer swimming lessons.  Never swim alone.   And, keep an eye on the kids, even if there's a lifeguard on duty.  When boating, make sure that everyone wears their personal flotation devices at all times.
  3. Stay hydrated.  During the warmer months of the year it's important to stay hydrated.  If you're thirsty, you're already hydrated.  Failure to do so can result in heat exhaustion and even heat stroke.   Cool water is always the best option.  Drink plenty of fluids during times of increased activity as well.  Always, bring some extra water with you.
  4. Protect against the bugs.  Mosquitos, ticks, and fleas all transmit diseases.  When outside, cover up as much as possible to protect again bug bites.   Use an appropriate insect & tick repellent.  Make sure to read the directions and apply it properly.  Check your children when the come in.  And, don't forget your pets – they need protection.
  5. Be prepared.  Whenever you're headed out ensure you've planned ahead.  Is your cell phone charged?  Did you bring a change of clothes or a light jacket in case the weather changes quickly.   Check your first aid kit to ensure it's fully stocked and items have not expired.   Don't forget the sunscreen and bug spray either.
